Minimal music and minimal enjoyment
Rating (2)
Date: 2006-11-02
I'm all for trying new music. Though i'd heard of Atomic Babies and Joey Jupiter (mostly through those K-Tel Digital Empire releases, which i think Jupiter himself produced), i wasn't familiar with their work. I found this record used for $2.98 and figured the risk was minimal. I should mention that there were several other copies of this disc at the same price. Theres' a reason for that: it's not very good.
granted, the loops and beats are "probably" programmed by Atomic babies themselves, so they get creativity points there. But otherwise, these tracks are just minutes of repetition with no hooks, no variation, and no energy. One can make more interesting music with pre-programmed loops on any software music production program, and even if you have no concept of songwriting, you'll still probably add more elements than these "songs". i listened to this CD while exercising, and it actually decreased my energy. The urge to fast forward will be great when you realize that each song is the same...no build or change in sound, just a few tired samples.
i guess some people will enjoy the simplicity of this, and maybe it all sounds better over a club speaker system. Maybe the Babies have improved since 1998 when "Breuklen Heightz" was released...let's hope so!

Put me to sleep

This CD isn't even acceptable as background music because it doesn't produce a background. It's crap and it puts me to sleep when I listen to it because there's really nothing there. When you listen to other dance CD's that are held together by a single beat and you wish for some diversity, well this has that, but it doesn't even interesting music otherwise. This is considered rave music, only kids who are on drugs and looking at bright flashing lights could possibly find this music remotely passable.

Simple machines creating boring music

I'm sorry, I feel that in the electronica scene there are alot of producers who *think* they know how to write music, but really don't. They belive all you need to know is how to push buttons on a machine and just keep pushing different buttons until you stumble onto something cool... This album the best example of this that I can find.My first problem with this disc is that the samples and sounds are very limited and over used, They are not trying anything new neither are they pushing the boundaries of what they can do, unlike Autechure, Moby, Roni Size, and Death in Veagas. This samples & sounds have allready been used by Underworld, Orbital, 808 State and Guy Called Gerald back in the late 80's early 90's. Second of all, they don't know how to write a good catchy hook synth line. They dabble on the edge of coming up with something good, but they manage to blow it by lack of imagination and music ability, if you can't read music then you can't write a song in any genre or style. My advice to the Atomic Babies: learn to read music and learn how to (at least) play the piano. If you are going to buy anything let me suggest Underworld's "dubnobasswithmyheadman", Orbital's "Orbital 2" or "Insides", 808 State's "EX:EL" or Leftfield's "Leftism"ÿ

yeah, I'll have to agree with Bart. the only reason i got this album was beacause on the Digital Empire album i fell instantly in love with "Smiles" unfortuneatly no track on Breulken Heightz comes close to Smiles, though the tracks do grow on you. I, as well, would recommend the same tracks Bart suggested. Sub Scapes is Good Techno. By the way Joey Jupiter is one of the two Djs that makes up AB. you may want to check his single stuff out too. in concluson you may just want to get this only if you are a diehard atomic babies fan or if you just love techno in general.

The first couple times I listened to this I couldn't stand it but the 3rd time it really clicked and I have to say this is a pretty good CD. It's got some funky 6-minute tracks that make for a good listen. My picks are tracks 3, 5, 6, 9, and 11... 1 & 2 are okay too.
