A good view of Greece as a world imperial power
Rating (4)
Date: 2006-10-21
Democratic classical Greece self-destructed after the disastrous failure of Pericles efforts to create an empire. It was replaced by the empire of Alexander and his successors, where democracy was consigned to oblivion. This became the "Hellenistic" Greek world.
This book is not light reading. However, Tarn's book shows the syncretic nature of Hellenistic political philosophy. Chapters II and III are of particular importance on political philosophy, showing the near total obliteration of democracy as a viable or respected system in the new system of Greek imperial power.
